Dear Friends, In our Lenten Discipline we’ve reached the important turning point from Conversion to Discernment. In Sunday School at 9:45 (hope to see you there), we’ll take a look back at the week, looking at the moment of acknowledgement of God and the presence of truth existing outside of ourselves, or at least outside of our preconceived, limited notions of ourselves. . It should be a great discussion, getting at how much it matters that we are becoming what God created us and is calling us to be. But once we have said those important words to God, said by so many throughout the Biblical story, “hineni (Here I am)” there is always the next step. We are children of God, created in His image, redeemed by the Son, and sustained by the Holy Spirit. What now? What are we being called to do and to be? Where do we begin our walk with God? More importantly, where is God leading us? How do we find the answer for this specific moment and time? He made us unique, so what is our unique offering of ourselves? During the service we begin that discussion as well. Come join us! Also, the children will be playing “The B-I-B-L-E” on the handbells during Children’s Time and the Choir will give a stirring anthem of “People Need the Lord.” Come see us this Sunday for a memorable, formative, and challenging message in worship and service of the Lord. Weekend Welcome for March 3, 2019 Dear Friends, I’m very excited that we have almost made it to our Lent, and we can begin our Lenten Discipline on The Christian Life. There is more information about this program in the Bugle that will come out Sunday, but I also want to give a plug for it here. My sermon this Sunday will open the season, and Lent will officially start with our special Ash Wednesday Service at 7. But even before then we will also have the traditional Fat Tuesday pancake supper 5:30 – 7 Tuesday Night. The sermon’s title for Sunday is “A Discipline.” In it I’ll talk about what discipline is, how it fits with what we are doing, and why I call our Lent program a “discipline.” So often the tradition in Lent is to stop doing something, but this year I hope we all can try something new. Come hear what it is all about! Then think about participating in the corresponding Sunday School Class, one of the many collective prayer and meditation times, one of the special worship services. Allow the rhythm of the pattern to infuse your life, preparing you for Easter’s celebration. More details will follow in this weekly email, and a full description of everything going on is in the Bugle Newsletter. Pete's message from Sunday. . . "Needed to Attempt the Impossible" -- What is needed to attempt the impossible. . . to love enemies, to turn the other cheek, to lend without return. . . faith.
Weekend Welcome for Sunday, February 24, 2019 Dear Friends, Love your enemies. . . Do good to those who hate you. . . Bless those who curse you. . . Pray for those who abuse you. . . If anyone strikes your cheek, offer the other also. . . From anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. . . Such words from Jesus begin the reading for Sunday, and raise the bar of love to seemingly impossible levels, and Jesus says so without hesitation, “If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?” He says that the typical standard anyone can do, no more is expected, always more. . . How are we to react to such demands? What makes this impossible command actually possible? What alone can do it? What must be realized before you can proceed? What is needed to attempt the impossible since Jesus says we need to . . . ? We with Jesus will seek to raise the bar some more. Join us on Sunday! Scripture Lessons Luke 6: 27-38 Genesis 45: 1-8 Sermon Title: “Needed to Attempt the Impossible” Yours in Christ, Pete
